Mission
As the owner of the overall infrastructure, Energinet.dk maintains the security of supply and ensures the smooth operation of the market for electricity and gas.

Energinet.dk's tasks:

maintaining the overall security of supply of electricity and gas in both the short and the long term;
developing the Danish electricity and gas transmission infrastructure;
creating objective and transparent conditions for competition within the energy markets and monitoring that competition works;
carrying out coherent and comprehensive planning, taking account of fu-ture transmission capacity requirements and the long-term security of supply;
supporting environmentally friendly electricity production and the devel-opment and demonstration of technologies for environmentally friendly energy production;
calculating the environmental impact of the energy system as a whole.

Infrastructure
Energinet.dk owns the gas transmission grid and the 400 kV electricity transmis-sion grid and is co-owner of the international connections between Denmark and the Nordic countries and Germany. Furthermore, the company has at its disposal the 132 kV and 150 kV electricity grids and has access to natural gas storage facilities.

Subsidiaries
Energinet.dk's two wholly owned subsidiaries - Eltransmission.dk A/S and Gas-transmission.dk A/S - operate and maintain the electricity and gas transmission grids. Form of incorporation: Energinet.dk is an independent public undertaking owned by the Danish state as represented by the Danish Ministry of Transport and Energy. Energinet.dk has its own Supervisory Board. The company was established pursuant to the Danish Act on Energinet Danmark from December 2004.

Finances
Energinet.dk's finances must balance. Most of the turnover is collected in the form of tariffs which must be approved by the Danish Energy Regulatory Body. The financial regulation of the company is determined by a government order from July 2005. The company generates an annual gross turnover of approx. 8 billion Danish kroner.

Background
Energinet.dk is the result of a merger between Eltra, Elkraft System, Elkraft Transmission and Gastra. The merger took place on 24 August 2005 with retro-spective effect from 1 January 2005.
