Objective
- Support a full spectrum of energy research to help the UK meet the objectives and targets set out in the 2003 Energy White Paper Our Energy Future - Creating a Low Carbon Economy
- Support research activities that will allow the UK to adapt to climate change effects
- Work in partnership with others to contribute to the research and postgraduate training needs of energy-related businesses and other key stakeholders
- Increase international visibility and level of international collaboration within the UK energy research portfolio
- Expand UK university research capacity in energy-related areas
High priorities for the programme include renewable energy sources, energy efficiency, conventional generation, nuclear fission, fusion, coal, and electricity supply. We are also looking into nuclear decommissioning and waste disposal, nuclear skills, further whole system energy research and fuel poverty.
The short term priorities for the programme are to:
- To develop better strategic engagement with energy business via the Energy Summits
- To renew the Sustainable Power Generation and Supply (SUPERGEN) research consortia
- To build capacity in low carbon research using the Carbon Vision Leadership programme and Science and Innovation Awards
- To sustain and expand the UK expertise to adapt to climate change with Research Networks and Platform Grants support
- To contribute to the second phase of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change
- To appoint an Energy Champion, as a Senior Energy Research Fellow to raise the international profile and level of collaboration within the Energy Programme
- To establish an Engineering Doctorate for nuclear skills
- To establish a research consortia to consider the socio-economic aspects of nuclear fission as part of a mixed energy economy
- To fund materials research that underpins energy technologies
- To refresh the management of the Cross-Council Scientific Advisory Committee and continue to develop the programme via the Cross-Council Programme Management Group.
