SEI - Sustainable Energy Ireland
Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) is Ireland’s national energy authority with a mission to promote and assist the development of sustainable energy. This encompasses environmentally and economically sustainable production, supply and use of energy, in support of Government policy, across all sectors of the economy. Its remit relates mainly to improving energy efficiency, advancing the development and competitive deployment of renewable sources of energy and combined heat and power, and reducing the environmental impact of energy production and use, particularly in respect of greenhouse gas emissions.
SEI is responsible for:
- advising Government on policies and measures on sustainable energy;
- implementing programmes agreed by Government;
- stimulating sustainable energy policies and actions by public bodies, the business sector, local communities and individual consumers.
SEI manages programmes aimed at:
- assisting deployment of superior energy technologies in each sector as required;
- raising awareness and providing information, advice and publicity on best practice;
- stimulating research, development and demonstration (RD&D);
- stimulating preparation of necessary standards and codes;
- publishing statistics and projections on sustainable energy and achievement of targets.
The RE RD&D Programme aims to stimulate the deployment of renewable energy by:
- accelerating the development and deployment in the Irish marketplace of competitive renewable energy products, processes and systems.
- providing support for solutions that enable technical and other barriers to market uptake and/or modal switching to be overcome.
- establishing, where necessary, and strengthening, where possible, a national capacity to access, develop and apply international class RD&D in a way that can best meet specific Irish needs on a continuing basis.
- facilitating and providing guidance to policy makers
SEI also operates renewable technology deployment programmes as follows:
- the ReHeat Deployment Programme which provides capital grant support for renewable heating technologies, including wood fuelled boilers – refer to www.sei.ie/reheat;
the Biomass CHP / Anaerobic Digestions CHP Call for Proposals which provides capital grants for biomass CHP and anaerobic digestion CHP installations – refer to www.sei.ie/bio_chpgrants.
